Bold colors rule!

8 September 2018

It seems the fashion scene has been shifting since a few years toward color. Designers are embracing audacity in the combination of shock colors despite cultural bias on the subject.

Red and pink swear? Blue and green should never be seen? As Roksanda Ilincic says in the FT Weekend article “Shock of the hue”, “I like to challenge the perception of what goes together and what doesn’t”. Audacious designers have always existed, the difference today is that more and more people are buying it.

Basically, the fashion of neutrals on runways has been replaced by bold colors on simple versus complex designs and patterns. Why is that?

There are several possible reasons:

  1. Boldness: Clean lines make us focus on the essentialness of the colors.

  2. Empowerment of women: Women are empowering themselves, wearing colors, and assuming their femininity and strength. It forms part of the process of “stepping up”.

  3. Color in men’s clothes: Wearing color is a big step for most men, but one they are ready to embrace, just as long as they find what they need conveniently and quickly.

  4. Art: Artists like Picasso, Sonia Delaunay, Paul Klee or Modiano are definite influences in the combination of colors.

  5. E-commerce: If you are an online shopper, haven’t you noticed that you are more drawn to color than in a store? It is because you see the clothes on skin which makes it look great. Also, black and neutrals looks sad online (as they often do when worn), so go ahead with the color!

  6. Personal style: Selfies, and extensive presence on social media mean we try to transmit a personal style. That passes through the way we dress in terms of style and color. Wearing colour looks a lot better on Instagram than a little black dress!
